The only time to use flushable litter for your cat

Cat litter is a very highly debated topic on the internet among cat owners. Do a simple google search and you'll see what I'm talking about. Should you use traditional clay litter? Maybe flushable litter? I'm going to set the record straight on the only time you should use flushable litter for your cat.

Why would you want flushable litter?

Let's face it. The only reason you're even conidering using flushable litter is because you want to make cleaning up after your cat an easier job. I mean really the only bad thing about having a cat is cleaning up the litter. Otherwise, cats are pretty much the perfect pet. With traditional litter cleaning up the box can be a real chore. Especially if you don't clean it every other day. It starts to smell horrible and clean up gets messy.

I will tell you. The absolute only time you should use flushable litter is if you meet the following two requirements:

1. You have an extra bathroom, preferably low traffic

   As we determined already, the only reason you're considering flushable litter is for ease of clean up. So guess what? If you don't have the litter box directly in the bathroom, it won't make it any easier to clean up! You'll still have to scoop the litter into a receptacle, bring it into the bathroom, then scoop it into the toilet. That's a hassle. But, if you have an extra bathroom, preferably one that isn't used much, you have a perfect place to keep your flushable litter box. With the litter box in the unused bathroom, you can check it once a day and scoop all of the clumps right into the toilet and flush them. Easy right? You bet.

2. You DON'T have a septic system

   Septic systems are a no go for flushable litter. Septic systems are just not made to handle flushable litter. Yes, you can use the flushable litter in a septic system, but it's just a matter of time before you get clogged pipes. I know a lot of the flushable litter companies claim that their litter is "septic safe". Don't believe them. You'll end up with an expensive plumbing bill at some point. Remember, flushable litter is about making your life easier. Clogged pipes and big plumbing bills are the exact opposite of making your life easier.

Some might want to argue that flushable litter is more expensive. In reality this just is not true. Yes, it does cost more at the store. Trust me though, you will use far less flushable litter than you will with traditional litter. So in the long run, the cost evens out.

So there you have it. The ONLY time you should use flushable litter is if you meet the requirements of having an extra bathroom and not having a septic system. That's it, the debate is over. I know some might argue with my point, but it's pretty straight forward. Like I said it all comes down to why you would use flushable litter....to make your life easier. Trust me....your life won't be any easier if you don't follow my two rules.
